How to practice surfing at home (when the ocean is humbling you)
Okay… I’m just going to say it.
Surfing more doesn’t automatically make you better.
I wish it did, because that would make life a lot easier. Just surf more, get better, done. But if you’ve ever gone out a few times in a row and somehow felt worse each time… yeah, you already know that’s not how it works.
I’ve had surfs where I didn’t catch a single wave and paddled in like… cool, love that for me 😅
If you’ve been feeling stuck, or like you’re going backwards, you’re not broken. You’re just relying on the ocean to teach you everything.
And the ocean is chaos.
here’s what’s actually happening
When you’re in the water, you’re dealing with so much at once.
Waves are moving, your timing is off, there are people around you, and your brain is doing that fun thing where it overthinks everything at the worst possible moment.
So even if you almost get something right, you don’t get enough clean reps for it to actually stick.
That’s why progress feels slow… or non existent.
what actually helped me (and no it’s not just “surf more”)
I had to take it out of the water for a bit.
Not forever… just enough to actually feel the movements without everything else going on.
Because once you strip it back, surfing is basically balance, foot placement, weight shifts and confidence.
That’s it.
And those things are way easier to practice when you’re not getting smashed by waves.
what to actually practice at home
Not in a strict routine way… just things to mess around with so your body starts to get it.
Pop ups, but slower
Like way slower than you think. Actually land your feet where they’re meant to go instead of just hoping for the best.
Balance without panicking
Not that stiff, shaky balancing… like actually being relaxed on it.
Walking your board if you’re longboarding
This is a big one. Trying to learn that in the water is honestly brutal, so even just stepping back and forward at home makes a huge difference.
Weight shifts
Forward, back, side to side. This is literally your surfing right here.
